There was a time when buying a good quality shared web hosting would cost a fortune. Shared web hosting offered limited amount of hard disk and bandwidth and the rest of the server resources like processor and RAM was also shared.
Buying a dedicated hosting was a luxury in not so distant past.

The reason why I chose VPS
The reason why I chose VPS account was to keep my sites separate from all the junk sites on shared server. Low quality sites on the same server can harm search engine ranking of your site.
